Is Starting a Blog Your New Year’s Resolution?

I’ve been following blogs for a long, long time. And I even started this little blog back in 2011 when I was running and working out a lot. I even kept up with it on and off. But this year I re-launched it with a few goals:
1. To share some of my experience being a working mom
2. Help others with productivity and organization
3. Have a creative outlet
4. Create a business that worked around my schedule where the sky was the limit
Maybe you’re great at something, or maybe you’ve seen other people start a blog and you’ve thought “I could totally do that.” Or maybe you’re like me, and saw the business potential of blogging. I’ve had a lot of trial and error in what it takes to start a blog, and also what I wish I would have done before I started! So to get started…
1. Decide what you want to write about.
Now, this is where it took a lot of trial and error for me. I initially thought I was going to go lifestyle/fashion blogging. It is fun, I have a unique area with office fashion, but this area is hard. It also wasn’t conducive to my strengths. I’m good at productivity and saving money, which doesn’t mesh well with my closet needing to be filled with the latest fashion.
So ask yourself these questions:
- What are you good at? What do people say you’re good at?
- What do you enjoy? (I enjoy reading fashion blogs, in my jeans and tshirt haha.)
- What problems can you solve for your readers (THIS QUESTION! This was a game-changer for me).
- What topics can you blog about 2-3 times each week? Constant content is essential!
2. Write 10-20 blog post (or at least the outlines)
This is where I would go back and start over. I did good for a few weeks, but if I would have done this, my niche would have been much more narrowed down. I’ve gone back in the last month and wrote 25 blog post. My niche became so clear after doing this!
Now you’re ready for the big step.
3. Purchase a domain and hosting plan!
I’ve been extremely happy with Bluehost. When I was trying to switch from a free WordPress account to a paid one, their customer service finally got it figured out for me and I spent so little time waiting.
Your blog is LIVE! Before you start sharing with the world, I would work on your website design and content. Get your “about me” and contact pages up and going.
4. Setup an email list.
This is actually my #1 regret. I waited until I had been blogging for four months before getting an email list. All of those visitors to my blogs that I didn’t capture!
The reason I was so hesitant was because I am the biggest unsubscriber of email list. I also didn’t want another expense early on.
5. Make some money!
There are so many streams of income. I understood the general concept of affiliate marketing, but it wasn’t until I took THIS COURSE that I went from making $20-$50/month to over $500 (and climbing!) I wish I would have purchased it earlier.
I also started small with Amazon Associates. It’s pretty amazing how the links add up! I’m hoping to write another post on affiliates soon, so stay tuned!
6. Be consistent!
There were a few weeks where I didn’t publish or only posted once, and I think it really slowed my growth.
7. Set Your Goals
This blog is actually a BIG part of my New Year’s Resolutions. The sky is the limit in terms of income with blogs, but it does take some serious work. I spend a minimum of five hours on EACH blog post. Not just writing, but then posting, promoting, and pinning.
